In the ancient art of Jujitsu you use your opponents force against them.  They attack you counter attack or use their momentum against them.

This works really well in sales and marketing as well.  You see most people hate to be sold to!  But people like to buy…go figure.  If you come off as a person trying to sell something to someone they will immediately put up their defenses, or worse go on the attack,” This is a SCAM or one of those Pyramid schemes.”

Now you’ve lost momentum if you react to this.   Ask them, do you think this is a pyramid scheme?  What about this so far, makes you think it is a pyramid scheme?  Then shut up and listen.  You will get much farther in sales if you listen more than you talk. You have two ears, and one mouth, use them accordingly.

Let’s take a look at what I mean in this video below.  Watch Jet Li, does he attack or does he move off someone else’s attacks, use their momentum against them?

I’d like to thank JR Estares and YouTube for this next video that will teach you a valuable lesson about sales and marketing?

Notice that Jet Li rarely attacks, or in our case pitches their product.  Jet Li waits and reacts off of the opponent’s attack, much the same way you must find out what is really going on with your prospect.  You must ask questions when they attack and make statements that are not based in fact, or that are general and not really getting to the problem that they have, which is why they are considering you in the first place.

Remember people hate to be sold to.  Rather, they buy from people that they know, like and trust.  Get to know people, find out why they think they need to be in business for themselves.  Make sure you ask questions and then listen to the answers.  Ask them to tell you more, about the last thing they said if they were very general in what they say.

Remember, in most cases people hate to be sold to, they have a problem, or they wouldn’t be reaching out to you.    That is your power.  You know that they wouldn’t be talking to you or looking at your product or service unless they had:

1. An impending event

2. A real pain they need to get rid of

3. They have a goal that they can not reach

It is probably best if you do not waste your time helping people buy from you that do not have one of the above.  If you do not here one of the above in some form it is best that you thank the person for their time, try to leave them better than when you first encountered them, and politely tell them you can not help them.

A wise man once said, I think it was Andrew Carnegie, “people never do anything unless there is something that they can get from it.”  There are reasons behind everything that people do, act, or say in life.  Your task is to find out the reasons why people are looking at you, or what those reasons look like to them.

One thing is for certain.  Once the buying decision process starts they will do one of three things:

1.  Buy From You

2. Do Nothing

3. Buy From Someone Else.

Don’t aggressively go after people unless they have shown you that they want to buy from you.  Help them buy, but do not chase them.  Help them figure out that you are the best alternative to the competition.  Help them see that you genuinely have their best interest at heart.
